EV charging infrastructure for UK businesses: costs, grid capacity and funding
Most businesses budget for chargers and get caught by everything behind them. Civils, cabling, protection and the supply upgrade routinely account for more of the bill than the hardware. This guide covers the real cost shape of a commercial charging installation and how it is normally funded.

What a commercial charging installation actually costs
There is no single price for a charge point because the same unit costs very different amounts to install depending on how far it sits from the incoming supply and what is under the ground between the two. The ranges below are the fully installed shape we see across UK quotes.

Grid capacity is the decision, not the chargers
Before anything is specified, the question is how much spare capacity the site already has. A unit with a 200 kVA supply running at 120 kVA on a busy afternoon cannot simply add four 50 kW rapids. The options are then a supply upgrade through the DNO, or managing the load so the existing supply is never exceeded.
Load management software staggers and throttles charging across the bays. On a depot where vehicles sit overnight, that is often enough on its own. Where turnaround is fast and the peak is unavoidable, an on-site battery can shave the peak so the site draws steadily rather than in spikes. Both routes are usually cheaper and considerably faster than a reinforcement job.
- Pull twelve months of half hourly data before specifying anything.
- Ask the DNO for a budget estimate early. The answer shapes the whole design.
- Price load management and a battery alongside the upgrade, not after it is quoted.
- Lay ducting for future bays while the ground is already open.
How the installation is funded
Charging infrastructure is funded the same way as other energy plant, on hire purchase or a finance lease over three to seven years. The useful part is that the facility can normally cover the installed project rather than only the hardware, provided the scope is itemised properly.
Where a project includes a DNO charge, that element usually sits outside the facility because it buys a connection rather than an asset. It is still worth raising early, because it changes the cash profile of the first month.
- Normally fundable: chargers, cabling, containment, switchgear, groundworks, bollards, signage, commissioning and back office hardware.
- Assessed case by case: extensive civils and surfacing, since these can read as land improvement.
- Usually outside the facility: DNO connection charges, planning fees and ongoing software subscriptions.
Grants and allowances
Government support for workplace charging has existed in various forms and the terms move regularly, including the value per socket and the number of sockets covered. Treat any grant as a reduction to a project you would do anyway rather than the reason for doing it, and confirm the current rules at the point of application.
Separately, charging equipment is plant and can attract capital allowances. The treatment depends on the funding structure you choose, so it is worth a short conversation with your accountant before the paperwork is signed rather than after.
