EV charger installation cost in the UK, line by line
Two charging quotes for the same car park can differ by a factor of three. The difference is almost never the charger. Here is what sits inside the price and which lines you can fund.
The short version
- Cable run length and ground conditions are the biggest single cost drivers.
- Ask every installer to price the same list or the comparison means nothing.
- Ducting for future bays is cheap while the ground is open and expensive afterwards.
- Nearly all of the installed scope can be funded, including the civils.
The cost lines that matter
A comparable quote should itemise each of these. If one quote is missing a line, it is not cheaper, it is incomplete.
- Charge point hardware, with warranty term and connector count stated.
- Mounting: wall bracket, post or pedestal, plus wheel stops and bollard protection.
- Trenching and reinstatement, priced by surface type. Tarmac, block paving and concrete all differ.
- Ducting, cabling and containment, priced by metre run.
- Distribution board works, protection devices and any new sub board.
- Metering, load management hardware and network connectivity.
- Commissioning, certification and handover documentation.
- Back office platform, tariff setup and any recurring per socket fee.
What actually drives the variation
The dominant variable is distance from the incoming supply to the bays, and what has to be crossed to get there. A run across soft landscaping is straightforward. The same distance across a service yard with live drainage, an access route that has to stay open and a concrete apron is a different job entirely.
The second is capacity. If the site cannot carry the new load, the project either adds load management, adds storage, or waits for the DNO. That decision changes the budget far more than the choice of manufacturer.
What can be financed
Charging is treated as energy plant by funders who understand the sector, which means the installed project rather than the box on the wall.
- Normally fundable: hardware, mounting, cabling, containment, switchgear, load management, commissioning and protection.
- Assessed case by case: significant surfacing and civils, which can read as improvement to the land.
- Usually outside the facility: DNO charges, planning fees and ongoing software subscriptions.

Indicatively £3,500 to £8,000 fully installed where groundworks are involved, and less where the unit sits close to an existing board with spare capacity. The cable run and the surface being dug are the main variables.
What does trenching cost for EV charging?
It is normally priced per metre and varies by surface. Soft ground is the cheapest, block paving sits in the middle because it has to be lifted and relaid, and reinforced concrete is the most expensive. Ask for the rate per metre and the assumed run length so you can sanity check the total.
Is it cheaper to install several chargers at once?
Almost always. The fixed costs of mobilisation, trenching, board works and commissioning are shared across the bays, so the second and third unit cost far less than the first. Laying spare ducting for future bays at the same time is one of the cheapest decisions available.
Can I finance EV charger installation over time?
Yes. Hire purchase and finance lease both apply, generally over three to seven years, and the installed scope rather than only the hardware can sit inside the facility when the quote is itemised clearly.
